Torsten Exner studied biochemistry at the universities of Bayreuth and Hanover. After conducting research in the field of organic chemistry in a Max Planck working group in Rostock, he completed his doctorate in pharmacology at the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital in Berlin in 1999. Dr. Exner then remained loyal to science, first in the field of lead discovery in the pharmaceutical industry in Sweden and then at the Bioprocessing Technology Institute in Singapore.
Dr. Exner began his training in intellectual property law in Singapore in 2003, where he also began his work in intellectual property, which he continued in Germany in 2006. He is admitted to practice as a German and a European patent attorney, and as a representative before the Unified Patent Court and the European Union Intellectual Property Office. He joined the law firm Michalski - Hüttermann & Partner at the beginning of 2014. Dr. Exner has been a partner in the firm since 2016.
His primary areas of practice include the prosecution and enforcement of patent applications and patents. He has extensive experience in all aspects of proceedings before the European Patent Office, including oppositions and appeals. He is also familiar with the national specifics in worldwide patenting strategies. He prepares freedom-to-operate analyses and expert opinions, in particular in the fields of pharmacology, pharmacy, organic chemistry, biology, biochemistry and biotechnology.
